Kate Bennett

Exhibitor | Jewellery | 2023

Katherine Bennett credits her unique and singular creative insight to the unconventional and often informal path she took to jewellery design and fabrication. Armed with a broad range of skills, from metal-smithing to those acquired as a costumier, she is a voracious student of jewellery and fashion design, who constantly adopts and adapts emerging techniques and media to expand her superlatively variegated portfolio and vision.

Katherine’s introduction to the fundamentals of metalsmithing came while attending Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She later began a two year residency at the Faulkner Gallery developing her own unique style. Often incorporating unusual and recycled materials in her work. Illustrating that one can make exceptional art and jewellery by an unconventional means.

“Many of my pieces incorporate found objects. I work with a variety of materials including metals, resins, wood, gemstones, and clay. I draw new inspiration from finding an unusual material, treatment, or technique and transforming it into a beautiful work of art. In order to emphasize subtle hidden meanings, I began incorporating spent bullet casings into some of my jewellery designs. I found it essential and also very natural and intuitive to use my art to subvert their political and ideological power.” - Kate Bennett
