Ekaterina Korzh

Exhibitor | Jewellery | 2023

Ekaterina Korzh is a jewellery artist based in Kansas. She obtained her master's from the University of Iowa and also has a scientific background in Geography. Her first acquaintance with jewellery making happened in Colombia where she took her first classes with Francisco Jose Pineros.

Today, Ekaterina combines traditional crafts and contemporary techniques. Her major interest in material research brought her to use recycled plastics, found wood, leftover fabric, and other fibres. She is also interested in surprising and deceiving the viewer with her works. For that she combined the most unexpected materials and techniques together, making bulky pieces light and vice-versa.

Her jewellery has been on shows worldwide: from USA, through Europe and Russia. She also tries to keep traveling herself and devote her pieces to this never-ending geography practice.

I always was a very curious person and this curiosity found its place in my jewellery practice. Throughout my career, I spend most of my time on material exploration. That is how I recently developed the way to use regular grocery store bags into a very unique marble-looking material for my jewellery. But the process also plays a vital role in my practice. So, I am constantly learning new techniques or experimenting and developing my own. That is how I started to incorporate gold work embroidery into my fabric-based jewelry pieces and found a way to set my enamels into beadwork.

With my work, I'm inviting a viewer into my world of material exploration. I expect my audience to be deceived by the way my work was created, how much it could weigh or which sensation it gives to the wearer, and what particular topics it could explore. My goal is to impulse their positive feeling as soon as they solve this riddle. Bright colours that I use a lot should emphasise the joy of this discovery and the beauty of the materiality of the world around us.
